Plainfield, USA – A patrol car received an unexpected visitor when a Pileated Woodpecker landed on the front passenger-side window earlier this morning.
The bird tapped on the glass and appeared to linger, as if checking in, possibly searching for bugs or simply observing the scene.
The Plainfield Police Department shared the moment in a public service announcement, describing the encounter with humor and lighthearted advice for officers.
They noted that if a large black-and-white bird with a bright red crest approaches a cruiser, officers should “roll with it” and treat the visit as harmless. The department joked not to offer coffee and warned against attempting to arrest the bird for “disturbing the peace.”
The statement added that the woodpecker was not a suspect, but rather an honorary member of the force, playfully described as part of the “thin blue line.”
The department thanked the bird for stopping by and reminded residents that sometimes help can arrive in unexpected forms.
