Woman Runs Onto Course As Leader Takes Wrong Turn In Dramatic Los Angeles Marathon Finish

Los Angeles, United States – A chaotic moment during the final mile of the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon on March 8 unfolded as the lead male runner in a black singlet and shorts approached a fork in the road under clear blue skies in downtown Los Angeles.

Crowds lined the barricaded streets, cheering as police motorcycles, black SUVs equipped with cameras, and cyclists formed a motorcade ahead of the leader. High-rise buildings and palm trees framed the urban backdrop as spectators waved flags and held signs.

As the frontrunner neared the split in the road, a woman dressed in pink athletic wear carrying a green bag suddenly ran onto the course from the right. She moved just ahead of the leader and to his left, appearing to block his path and push him toward the center of the fork.

At the same moment, a man wearing an orange shirt waved the runner to the right while the motorcade turned right toward an exit ramp. The confusion caused the leader to follow the wrong direction off the course for about five seconds before stopping completely and turning back.

He then rejoined the correct route marked by white lines on the asphalt, while trailing competitors continued straight during the confusion.

The mishap allowed American Nathan Martin to close the gap and narrowly defeat Kenyan frontrunner Michael Kimani Kamau in a photo finish by just 0.01 seconds. Both runners finished with a time of 2:11:17, the closest finish in the history of the Los Angeles Marathon.

Kamau collapsed at the finish line and was taken away on a stretcher, though he did not suffer serious injury.

The poster described the dramatic moment, writing: “What a wild ending to the LA marathon. My mom was able to catch what led to the cinematic ending. The leader went the wrong way. Woman impedes his path, runs to his left and forces him into the middle of the fork + orange shirt waving him right + motorcade goes right at the fork.”
