USS Pinckney Helicopter Patrols Iranian Shipping Routes During U.S. Naval Blockade

Middle East – An MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter attached to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37 conducted blockade operations in front of a vessel on April 17, 2026, during the USS Pinckney’s deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

The operation forms part of the U.S. naval blockade of Iran that began in mid-April 2026. The mission targets merchant vessels, including tankers and cargo ships, attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports such as Bandar Abbas, along with ships suspected of violating U.S. sanctions through Iran’s so-called shadow fleet.

The footage shows the Sea Hawk helicopter flying ahead of a vessel as U.S. naval forces monitor, intercept, and redirect maritime traffic during the operation.

According to official U.S. Navy and CENTCOM context, dozens of commercial ships had already been redirected by late April 2026 as part of the sanctions enforcement effort in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean following collapsed peace talks and U.S. strikes on Iranian targets.

The operation is described as an economic pressure and sanctions enforcement campaign against Iran rather than a full wartime blockade, with humanitarian shipments reportedly still permitted to continue.
