U.S. Coast Guard Battles Ice To Save Ship Pushed Toward Shore On Lake Erie

Lake Erie, United States – The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay (WTGB 102) carried out ice-breaking operations on Lake Erie on January 28, 2026, assisting the 633-foot motor vessel Sam Laud.

Strong winds had pushed the Sam Laud dangerously toward the shore, raising concerns about the ship’s positioning overnight. The Bristol Bay escorted the vessel further north to ensure its safety.

This operation was conducted in preparation for the arrival of the tug Kimberly Joy the following day, which joined the convoy for the final push to layup.

The ice-breaking maneuver highlights the Coast Guard’s critical role in protecting Great Lakes shipping during harsh winter conditions.
