South Texas, United States – On June 4, 2026, state troopers responded to assist border patrol agents during a pursuit involving a tractor trailer along Highway 281 near Falfurrias.

During the chase, troopers deployed a tire deflation device in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued to evade law enforcement until the tractor trailer caught fire.

The driver and a passenger were removed from the cab by troopers and agents and taken into custody. The driver then informed authorities that additional occupants were inside the trailer.

Law enforcement quickly unlocked the trailer and rescued 39 suspected illegal immigrants before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

All individuals were medically screened for injuries prior to being taken into custody.

The incident underscores the risks associated with human smuggling operations and the coordinated response between state troopers and federal border patrol agents along major transport routes.
