Smoke From Fast-Growing Bryson Fire Rises Over Malibu At Sunset

Malibu, California – Smoke from the fast-growing Bryson Fire rose over the hills of Malibu at sunset on October 15 as the brush fire forced evacuations in the area.

X user Bob Dobbs filmed the plume from the side of a busy road, with traffic passing and palm-lined hills nearby. The smoke spreads low across the horizon under an orange evening sky. “Fire starting in Malibu?” the filmer wrote. In a second clip, a helicopter roars overhead past a coastal lagoon as the thick band of smoke glows above the shoreline.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, firefighters were called at about 4:40 p.m. to the fire on Encinal Canyon Road, when it covered about two acres. Pushed by strong winds amid red flag warnings, it grew to more than 100 acres by about 6:30 p.m.

An evacuation order was issued for the area closest to the fire, with evacuation warnings for the surrounding neighborhoods. Occupants of the nearby Camp Kilpatrick juvenile facility were told to shelter in place.
