Tampa, Florida – This is the moment a shelf cloud stretches across Tampa Bay during an evening thunderstorm, in footage filmed by X user Tampa Bay Storm Chaser.
The video shows a dark, low cloud bank spreading over the water, with rain falling in sheets beneath it. Shore lights glow along the far bank as the camera pans along the waterfront.
The clip was dated September 22, 2026, and labeled a Tampa Bay shelf cloud.
The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay recorded thunderstorms, heavy rain and a 31 mph gust in Tampa that day, along with 0.78 inches of rain.
Local forecasts had called for scattered afternoon and evening storms.
The feature was an evening thunderstorm outflow feature over the bay, not a hurricane or tornado.
