Sakurajima, Japan – An explosive eruption occurred at Sakurajima on April 18, 2026 at 23:30 (JPT), producing a volcanic ash plume that rose 2300 metres above the crater.
The eruption was recorded as an explosive event from the volcano, with ash and gas being ejected high into the atmosphere during nighttime activity.
It marked the fifth explosive eruption at Sakurajima during 2026, continuing a pattern of repeated volcanic activity at the site.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has previously classified Sakurajima as one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, with ongoing eruptions frequently observed from its crater system .
