Kagoshima, Japan – Video filmed by X user @seachicken_1059 shows the explosive eruption of Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima, Japan, on April 11, 2026.
The footage captures a powerful ash plume rising rapidly from the Minamidake crater. Thick gray-black smoke and ash surge into the sky, forming a towering column visible from afar. The eruption appears strong and continuous, with the plume expanding upward.
At approximately 12:04 PM local time, Sakurajima experienced its first major explosive eruption of 2026, and the first since December 2025.
The ash plume reached 3,400 meters above the crater. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a Level 3 alert, warning people not to approach the volcano. Ashfall was expected in parts of Kagoshima city and nearby areas.
