Sakurajima Erupts Sending 3400m Ash Plume Over Kagoshima

Kagoshima, Japan – A volcanic explosion occurred on April 11, 2026 at 12:04 PM (JPT), producing a powerful ash plume above Sakurajima.

The plume rose approximately 3,400 meters above the crater during the eruption.

It was identified as the first explosive eruption of the year 2026.

According to available reports, Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes and is located within the Aira Caldera system in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The activity on April 11 marked a significant eruptive event at midday local time.
