Red Smoke And Chants Mark Tribute For Slain Activist In France

Aix-en-Provence, France – On February 15, 2026, between 250 and 300 demonstrators gathered at Place de la Rotonde near the Palais de Justice for a peaceful homage rally honoring Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old far-right militant fatally injured during a clash with antifascists in Lyon on February 12.

Video filmed by X user Virginie Merlin shows the neoclassical courthouse facade under overcast skies as participants stand in orderly lines facing the building. Many wear dark clothing and hold portraits of Quentin Deranque along with signs demanding “Justice for Quentin” and “Justice for the Artists.” A large banner stretched across a railing reads “Justice for Quentin – Justice for the Martyrs,” while a speaker addresses the crowd.

As the camera pans across the square, dozens of red smoke flares are ignited. Thick crimson clouds rise and drift toward the courthouse steps as French flags wave through the haze. The group raises their arms in unison and chants solemnly while the red glow casts sharp shadows across faces and signs.

The footage alternates between close handheld shots of individuals lighting flares, sparks visible as they hold them high, and wider angles showing the crowd enveloped in swirling red smoke. A tripod-mounted camera appears in the foreground recording the event. The assembly remains standing under the winter sky.

The rally was organized by groups including Identité Libertés, led by Marion Maréchal, and formed part of similar peaceful tributes held in Nice, Paris, Toulon, and Montpellier. Participants demanded justice for what they described as Deranque’s “lynching,” with no reported incidents. The footage, shared by a local Identité Libertés organizer, intensified national discussion surrounding his killing.
