Heraklion, Greece – An intense red sandstorm driven by Sirocco winds carrying Saharan dust swept through the city on the afternoon of April 1, 2026.

Video filmed by X user DEUS shows thick orange-red dust filling the air, sharply reducing visibility as it moves violently through the streets. Cars, buildings, and trees are covered as the dust spreads across everything in sight, creating a surreal reddish haze.

The handheld footage captures the dramatic scene as strong winds push the massive dust cloud across the urban area, giving the city an almost apocalyptic appearance.

This event is part of a significant Saharan dust episode impacting large parts of Crete on the same day.
