London, United Kingdom – Supporters of the Take Back Power campaign carried out coordinated actions this morning, occupying and demonstrating at several high-end locations in central London.
Take Back Power is a nonviolent movement calling for a tax on extreme wealth, to be determined by a “House of the People.”
Around 10:00, 22 supporters entered a Ferrari dealership in Berkeley Square. Inside, they chanted “WE DEMAND EQUALITY!” and “THE BILLIONAIRES HAVE GOT TO GO!” before leaving at approximately 10:30.
At around 11:30, the group gathered again at Burlington Arcade, described as an exclusive luxury shopping venue. Demonstrators held signs reading “HOUSE OF THE PEOPLE” and “4 MILLION KIDS IN POVERTY,” which were quickly removed by security staff.
By about 12:20, the group moved to the food hall inside Harrods, where security responded more forcefully, removing protesters from the building.
A spokesperson for Take Back Power said the country is in crisis, blaming corporations and the super-rich for extracting wealth from working people and diverting attention through media influence. They stated that only a major redistribution of wealth and power away from the top one percent could address conditions in Britain.
One participant, Robert Pembroke, a 43-year-old builder from Devon, said inequality is increasing, claiming that 50 families in the United Kingdom hold more wealth than half the population, and that globally, eight men hold more wealth than half the world’s population. He also said people are dying as a result and called for a permanent citizens’ assembly known as a “House of the People.”
Another participant, Ana Heyatawin, a 63-year-old grandmother from Somerset, said inequality imposed by big business, billionaires, and political systems working for them is causing harm, adding that more than a third of people in the UK do not earn enough for basic necessities.
She also supported a permanent citizens’ assembly with authority over taxing extreme wealth.
The group is calling for the government to establish a permanent “House of the People,” selected by democratic lottery, with power over wealth taxation and national reform. They stated they will continue nonviolent action until a meaningful response is received.
