Powerful 7.7 Earthquake Shakes Hachinohe Supermarket As Shelves Collapse

Hachinohe, Japan – Video filmed by an X user named @kobantoking shows intense shaking inside a supermarket in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, during a powerful earthquake, as described in the caption: “Hachinohe Earthquake”.

The handheld footage begins in a brightly lit aisle with overhead Japanese signage reading “Regular checkout this way” and displays of household goods. A woman wearing a pink jacket and a face mask stands in the midground near stocked shelves as the ground suddenly begins to shake violently.

The camera jolts and sways as the tremors intensify, moving across aisles filled with diapers, detergents, tissues, and daily necessities. Shelves rock sharply back and forth, sending numerous items falling and scattering across the tiled floor.

The clip ends with a brief shot of a red shopping basket holding fresh green onions in the foreground while the shaking continues.

The footage was recorded during a major magnitude 7.5 to 7.7 earthquake that struck off the Sanriku Coast of northeastern Japan on April 20, 2026, causing strong shaking across northern Japan, including Hachinohe, and triggering initial tsunami warnings later downgraded to advisories.
