Choloma, Honduras – Protesters blocked a major highway in the department of Cortés during the afternoon, halting traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The National Police arrived to restore order. Protesters turned violent, setting tires and branches on fire. Gunshots were fired at officers from a nearby hill.
Police reported hearing multiple gunfire detonations. They believe the shooters may be armed with weapons of various calibers.
The situation forced police to call for reinforcements from nearby units in the Sula Valley. Their presence remained active into the night.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., the highway was reopened. Police cleared debris, including burned wood and tires, left by the protesters.
Some sections still had waste, but the road connecting Puerto Cortés, San Pedro Sula, and El Valle de Sula was mostly cleared.
Authorities hope that future unrest can be resolved through dialogue, to protect the right of free movement for all residents.
