Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam – Police in Ho Chi Minh City have seized more than 400 cats in what is described as one of the largest cat meat trade busts in the country’s history.
Around 40 cats have already been reclaimed by owners searching for their stolen pets, while more than 260 remain in police custody. These include kittens born after the seizure and several pregnant females.
A number of the cats died following the operation, though Humane World for Animals Viet Nam said the police and local volunteers acted decisively and helped save many lives.
Staff from Humane World for Animals Viet Nam carried out an emergency response visit, delivering cat food to support the large-scale care effort. They also provided fans to help prevent the animals from overheating.
Phuong Tham, country director of Humane World for Animals Viet Nam, described the scene as overwhelming, noting the large number of cats taken from a single transport linked to the illicit trade. She said many appeared thin and weak, and that the animals had likely endured both physical and mental suffering. She also reported that several pregnant cats were among those seized, along with newborn kittens delivered while in police custody.
She added that thousands of cats are stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered every month across the country, with most ending up in slaughterhouses or restaurants. She said the recent seizure and police action represent an important step in efforts to crack down on the trade.
Dr Karanvir Kukreja, campaign manager for Ending Dog and Cat Meat at Humane World for Animals, said the seizure highlights both the scale of the trade and changing attitudes within Viet Nam, including growing recognition of pet theft as a serious issue.
He also noted strong support from local volunteers, businesses, NGOs, and police. While efforts continue to reunite cats with owners, he said concern remains for those still held at the police station as evidence, and expressed hope they can soon be moved to a facility for ongoing care.
