Police Rescue Distraught Man From Gold Star Bridge After Emotional Stand Off

Groton, United States – Groton police officers rescued a distraught man from the Gold Star Bridge on May 3, 2026, after emergency responders reported a dangerous situation on the structure.

At around 4:48 p.m., the Groton Emergency Communications Center received a radio call from Groton Ambulance personnel crossing the bridge. They reported a man with one leg over the top of the bridge’s security barrier.

Officers Bryan Albee and Cristopher Brillon arrived and found the man straddling the barrier on the northern section of the I-95 southbound span.

The officers began speaking with him in a calm and supportive manner. During the interaction, the man asked Officer Albee for a hug. The officer agreed and told him he would receive one if he came down from the barrier.

The man climbed down safely from the structure. Officer Albee approached slowly, and the two embraced while continuing to talk.

Connecticut State Police later arrived and took control of the investigation. However, Officer Albee accompanied the man to a local hospital due to the connection established during the incident.

The man was transported by Groton Ambulance to Backus Hospital in Norwich for further evaluation.

Groton City Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
