Police Officer Fatally Shoots Motorcyclist Who Stole His Taser

Newport, California – A Newport Beach police officer fatally shot a motorcyclist who stole his taser during a traffic stop on April 17.

The incident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway near Superior Avenue and Hoag Hospital. The officer pulled over 45-year-old Geoff Shyam Stirling around 9:15 p.m. after he allegedly ran a red light.

Dash camera video shows Stirling refusing to comply with the officer’s commands to sit on the curb. As the officer radioed for backup, Stirling lunged at him.

A struggle followed on the roadside. Stirling managed to grab the officer’s taser and point it at him.

The officer ordered Stirling to drop the taser, then fired six shots from close range.

Stirling was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officer was not injured.

The California Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation under AB 1506, which requires a review when police shoot an unarmed person.

In the days following the shooting, Lydia McLaughlin, a former cast member of Real Housewives of Orange County, identified Stirling as her brother.
