Chicago, United States – Newly released body-camera and security footage shows a police officer fatally shooting his partner, Officer Krystal Rivera, during a June incident now described as friendly fire.
The video captures the moments leading up to the shooting inside an apartment building on the South Side of Chicago, as well as the aftermath of the incident.
The shooting occurred on June 5 after an investigative stop in Chatham. Footage shows the officers pursuing a suspect who runs into an apartment building after fleeing on foot.
Both officers follow the suspect inside. A tense situation unfolds in the apartment as another person appears to point what looks like a weapon toward the doorway.
As Officer Carlos Baker enters with his firearm raised, he shouts “Wait,” and a gunshot is heard moments later. Officer Rivera is struck and falls. Her body camera does not show the moment she is shot.
After the shooting, Baker is heard shouting “Shots fired at police!” while moving through the building. The footage also shows Rivera does not receive immediate assistance, with nearly two minutes passing before aid is provided.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident. Rivera’s family has filed a lawsuit alleging misconduct. Authorities have previously described the shooting as accidental, and Baker has been reassigned to a desk role during the investigation.
