Silver Spring, Maryland – The Montgomery County Department of Police 2nd District Investigative Section is asking the public for help identifying suspects who vandalized and damaged marked police cruisers during a street takeover.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at approximately 12:39 a.m. Police were alerted to a large group of young males in vehicles participating in street takeover activity that began in Prince George’s County and moved toward the Silver Spring central business district.
MCPD officers monitored the vehicles around midnight and closed most intersections in their path. The group continued along East West Highway and gathered at the intersection with Connecticut Avenue, blocking traffic and performing donuts in the roadway.
Several participants exited their cars and stood in the intersection, preventing officers from entering while the activity continued. During the incident, two marked Montgomery County Police cruisers were damaged. In one case, an officer was inside his vehicle when the rear window was broken and the windshield smashed. No officers were injured.
Maryland State Police responded to assist in clearing the area. Prior to the Montgomery County incident, Prince George’s County Police and Maryland State Police recovered three handguns during traffic stops linked to the street takeover.
