Maipu, Santiago, Chile – Video filmed by X user Mi nombre es Nadie shows several vehicles being carried away by floodwaters during a sudden flash flood in Maipu.
The footage was recorded on January 31, 2026. The post text reads, “Maipu, the water takes away the car,” reflecting the dramatic scene.
Turbulent brown waters surge over a submerged road under gray skies. Green grass strips and distant trees are visible, while a dark-barked tree leans at a 45-degree angle over the flood, its roots partially exposed.
A silver sedan floats sideways, colliding gently with the leaning tree before drifting out of view. Other vehicles were also caught in the flood, demonstrating the storm’s power. No people are seen nearby, but debris and the rapid current highlight the danger. A voiceover comments, “Do you see that it’s taking the car to the police?” followed by “Yes.”
This flash flood was part of an intense summer storm that struck western Santiago on January 31, 2026, dumping up to 17.4 millimeters of rain in less than an hour in Maipu. Overflow from the Santa Marta canal turned roads like Camino a Melipilla into fast-flowing rivers.
Vehicles, including buses and cars, were submerged or carried away, causing stalled engines, blocked routes, power outages, and significant property damage. Authorities reported no fatalities but urged caution, noting most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
