Colonie, New York, United States – A massive buildup of jagged ice chunks and debris packed tightly across the shallow Mohawk River formed an ice jam beneath the steel girders of the Twin Bridges on Interstate 87, also known as the Northway.
Bright sunlight cast long shadows over the dense field of white and gray ice slabs, while bare trees lined the distant wooded riverbanks beneath a clear blue sky. The obstruction stretched far along the riverbed, with only small patches of open water visible between the irregular blocks of ice.
The conditions were documented on March 10, 2026, during a flood warning issued by the National Weather Service for Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties. The warning followed the formation of an ice jam between Locks 6 and 8 on the Mohawk River.
The blockage caused minor flooding in low-lying areas, including the closure of SUNY Schenectady’s campus and roads such as Rosendale Road in Niskayuna.
As temperatures warmed, the jam eventually broke apart and moved downstream by the following morning, preventing a larger flood threat. Officials reported no major damage beyond localized ponding and temporary disruptions.
