Caraballeda, La Guaira, Venezuela – After 86 hours trapped beneath the rubble of the Breogan building in Caraballeda, 60-year-old Belkys Josefina Barreto Garcia was rescued alive following 11 hours of continuous rescue work.

The operation was carried out by Salvadoran rescuers with support from Peruvian USAR teams, working through the night and into the early morning in a sustained effort to reach her.

The rescue took place as part of the international response to the deadly earthquakes that struck on June 24, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, which caused severe destruction across the coastal region.

Rescuers confirmed that Belkys was stabilized at the camp after being brought out of the rubble. However, her condition was reported as still critical.

Because of her condition, a private helicopter was arranged to transfer her from the site to a private clinic in Caracas, where she is now receiving medical care.

During the operation, teams highlighted the effort and perseverance of rescuers who worked without pause throughout the night and early morning.

A message shared during the rescue stated, “May God bless you and give you strength.”
