Almonte, Huelva, Spain – A major fire broke out at a recycling plant in the Montehigos area, producing intense flames and heavy smoke as emergency teams worked to stop it spreading toward nearby forest land.
The blaze erupted at a long-abandoned recycling facility that had been closed for around five years. The site was previously used to process agricultural plastics and other waste materials.
Aerial footage shows large piles of waste material engulfed in bright orange flames. Thick black smoke rises in huge columns, spreading across the surrounding fields and rural landscape.
The fire spreads across the industrial site near dirt roads, scattered trees, and nearby structures. The scene was monitored using helicopter and drone operations, with live flight data overlays visible during the response.
Emergency crews deployed multiple units, including reinforcement brigades, forest firefighting teams, technical specialists, environmental agents, a water tanker truck, and a heavy helicopter to control the blaze.
Authorities reported that the smoke was dense and potentially toxic, prompting warnings for nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed.
The fire began between approximately 15:35 and 16:00 on April 20, 2026, and was later brought under control. It was fully extinguished the following day, with minimal spread into surrounding forest areas.
Officials stated that the fire is being investigated as a possible intentional act.
