Almería, Spain – On April 16th, X user Indalicus_UDA posted a video showing a huge column of black smoke visible from Almería and even Aguadulce. It was due to a fire at a recycling plant on the Carretera de El Mamí, northeast of the capital.
They said: Aquí se ve mejor, cerca del centro comercial Torrecárdenas. Al otro lado de la rambla.6
A significant fire broke out at the Lunimar recycling plant located on the Carretera del Mamí in Almería, Spain. The blaze created a dense column of dark gray smoke visible across the city and nearby towns.
According to the 112 Emergency Services, calls began flooding in around 7 p.m., with over fifty reports received. Firefighters, along with agents from the Guardia Civil and National Police, were dispatched to the scene.
The entire warehouse of the recycling plant was engulfed in flames. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The fire began around 7:30 p.m. and quickly escalated, with flames reaching several meters in height. Wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour contributed to the rapid spread.
As firefighters worked to control the blaze, the Guardia Civil de Tráfico managed traffic in the dangerous area. National and Local Police also collaborated in the emergency response.
Earlier in the day, at around 3:40 p.m., another fire broke out in a two-story house on Calle Verdiales in the El Puche neighborhood. Four people, including two police officers and two civilians, were treated for smoke inhalation.
Residents expressed concern over the fire’s proximity to key infrastructure like the Torrecárdenas hospital. Emergency services continued to receive alarmed calls throughout the evening.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire at the Lunimar recycling plant, which processes plastic and cardboard waste. Workers tried to evacuate stored materials but were unsuccessful due to the rapid spread.
This is not the first fire at the Lunimar plant. In October 2020, the facility experienced another major blaze involving similar materials.
The Almería recycling plant fire highlights the risks linked to waste processing facilities dealing with flammable materials. Officials are expected to provide further updates.
Community members are urged to stay away from the area and follow directives from authorities to ensure safety.
