Manatee Approaches Police Boat Seeking Fresh Water During Dockside Patrol In Florida Waters

Bradenton, United States – Officers Emrich and Eades of the Bradenton Police Department Marine Unit were finishing their patrol and rinsing their boat when an unexpected visitor appeared at the dock.

The animal, described as a manatee, approached the vessel and came in seeking fresh water while officers were wrapping up their duties.

Authorities noted that although manatees are drawn to fresh water, they should not be given water or encouraged to approach people or boats, as this can cause them to associate humans with food or handouts, putting them at risk.

Officers said they did not issue a citation and waited for the manatee to leave before docking the vessel, noting that even in such encounters, manatees are given the right of way.
