Chelan County, WA – A man narrowly escaped tragedy after breaking through the ice at Fish Lake while officers were nearby conducting rescue training.
The King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit was wrapping up its annual ice diving and rescue exercises alongside the Mercer Island Police Department dive team when they suddenly saw the man fall into the lake.
With the water at just 35 degrees, officers immediately moved in and pulled him to safety.
A sergeant later said the man was okay and was able to drive himself home, adding that the outcome could have been very different if the unit had not been there at that moment.
