Man Bites Police K-9 During Chaotic Arrest At Search Warrant Scene

Florence, United States – A man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he bit a police K-9 during a confrontation at the scene of an active search warrant operation.

On April 22, 2026, the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force carried out a search warrant in the 200 block of North Locust Street. The operation included support from the Florence-Lauderdale SWAT team and a police K-9 unit.

Police said 46-year-old David Culliver, from Sheffield, was not connected to the investigation but arrived at the scene and began interacting with officers. Authorities allege he became disruptive, shouted at officers, and repeatedly stepped into an active roadway despite warnings to move for safety.

Officers attempted to arrest Culliver after he continued entering traffic and interfering with the scene. According to police, he resisted arrest, and a K-9 was deployed.

During the struggle, authorities say Culliver grabbed the police dog and bit it before officers were able to restrain him and place him in handcuffs.

Culliver was transported to North Alabama Medical Center for treatment of puncture wounds described as injuries from the K-9. He was later booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

He faces charges including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and interfering with a police dog. Officials said he remains in custody on a $2,500 bond.

Authorities released body camera footage to provide additional context and stated that the incident was reviewed, with the use of force found to be justified.
