Charlotte, North Carolina, USA – Video filmed by X user Mandy Powers Norrell captures snow and ice covering Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and nearby roadways during a severe winter storm.
The footage was recorded on January 31, 2026, between 11 a.m. and noon. The post text reads, “A few videos of CLT airport and interstate road conditions as we made our way home when my flight landed yesterday. People seem to want to use these in their own reporting. You can use them. Just give me credit when you do. Okay?”
The clip shows a snow-blanketed tarmac with multiple American Airlines planes parked. Ground crews in high-visibility gear are de-icing and servicing aircraft, while snowplows clear narrow paths on the slippery surface. Service vehicles like tugs and baggage carts navigate carefully amid falling snow under gray, overcast skies with low visibility.
On nearby highways, tire tracks in slush and snow-covered trees line multi-lane roads. Vehicles move cautiously, with reduced speeds and limited sight of 100–200 feet ahead, emphasizing the perilous driving conditions. A worker in bright yellow gear shovels snow near vans and equipment under a terminal, highlighting the scale of the airport’s response.
These conditions were caused by Winter Storm Gianna, a bomb cyclone that dumped 8–15 inches of snow across the Charlotte metro area. The storm created treacherous roads with black ice, reduced visibility, and numerous crashes, including a pileup of over 100 vehicles on I-85 in Cabarrus County. The National Guard was called to assist stranded motorists.
At CLT, over 800 flights were canceled the following day. American Airlines ground stops and de-icing efforts by a 300-member snow team were required to clear runways and taxiways. Authorities urged residents to stay off roads, warning that secondary routes could take up to a week to clear. Wind chills dropped into single digits, marking one of the heaviest snowfalls in over a decade for the region.
