Hakodate, Japan – Video filmed by an X user named @aWAmWXvmgl2414
shows a rare “78 start” train movement at the Hakodate Transport Depot being suddenly disrupted by an earthquake, as described in the caption: “Hakodate Transport Depot Earthquake I was trying to catch a rare 78 start but the earthquake hit”.
The unsteady handheld footage begins in daylight at the depot yard, where a red-and-beige diesel multiple unit marked for one-man operation slowly exits a large maintenance building identified with yellow signs numbered 4 and 5.
At the same time, a red DE10 1737 locomotive with its headlights on moves forward on a neighboring track. A worker wearing a yellow safety vest stands nearby as both trains continue through an industrial setting filled with poles, signals, overhead wiring, and surrounding structures.
Moments later, the camera shakes violently as the earthquake strikes. The footage cuts to a low-angle perspective beneath a nearby metal overpass, where dust and debris can be seen falling while overhead wires sway.
The camera then pans across the depot, railway lines, distant mountains, and industrial buildings under clear skies as the shaking continues.
The video was recorded on April 20, 2026, during a powerful magnitude 7.5 to 7.7 earthquake that struck off the Sanriku Coast near Iwate Prefecture at around 4:53 PM local time.
