Lake Michigan, USA – On January 25, 2026, the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB 30) provided direct assistance to the 650-foot motor vessel Algoma Intrepid near Beaver Island on Lake Michigan.
The Mackinaw made high-speed passes by the vessel, breaking up ice and opening navigable channels to ensure the Algoma Intrepid could safely continue its transit.
This operation demonstrates the critical role of icebreaking cutters in maintaining safe navigation on the Great Lakes during winter conditions, preventing delays and hazards for large commercial vessels.
