El Paso, Texas – A traffic stop on Interstate 10 nearly turned tragic when a distracted driver crashed into a stopped vehicle and narrowly missed striking an El Paso Police Department motorcycle officer.

The officer was conducting a traffic stop with emergency lights activated when the driver failed to control their speed and crashed into the stopped vehicle. The impact pushed the vehicle approximately 500 feet down the shoulder.

The officer was injured, and the driver of the stopped vehicle was transported to the hospital with injuries. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

The at-fault driver was cited for Failure to Control Speed Causing a Collision.

The incident serves as a reminder that traffic stops are among the most dangerous parts of an officer’s job. The El Paso Police Department released body-camera footage of the crash and reminded drivers to follow Texas “Move Over or Slow Down” laws.

Drivers are required to move over when it is safe to do so or slow significantly if they cannot. Motorists were also reminded to stay alert and eliminate distractions behind the wheel.
