Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi — A video released by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory shows dramatic scenes from a monitoring helicopter overflight on Tuesday, April 22.
The footage captures high fountaining from the south vent at the summit of Kīlauea during episode 18 of the ongoing eruption.
Additional clips were recorded during a field visit to the south rim of the caldera, showing active volcanic behavior in the area.
While the main fountain came from the south vent, the north vent featured low fountaining inside a lava pond, with continuous overflows down the cone flank.
The video was filmed by H. Winslow and M. Patrick of the USGS.
