Palmer, Kansas – A dramatic video filmed on May 18, 2026 near Palmer in Washington County captured a massive cone-shaped tornado descending from a huge, low-hanging storm cloud over rural farmland and grassy fields.
The footage, recorded handheld by X user Shane R Muckey and captioned “Storm number three did it headed for storm number four,” shows the dark tornado rotating powerfully as it moved steadily across the landscape under a heavy overcast sky.
In the foreground, a vehicle appearing to be a truck or SUV sat parked beside a paved road with its headlights shining brightly. Its door was open, and a person could be seen nearby while the tornado advanced across the fields.
As the camera panned and tilted to track the twister, tilled farmland, scattered trees, and distant storm chasers or spotters became visible on the horizon.
The tornado was part of a larger severe weather outbreak that struck northeast Kansas that day. The National Weather Service confirmed at least seven tornado reports, including several touchdowns near Palmer around 4 p.m. and additional tornadoes later east and northeast of Blue Rapids in Marshall County.
Storm chasers remained active throughout the region as supercell storms moved east-northeast, producing fast-moving tornadoes. Minor tree and structural damage was reported, but no injuries were confirmed.
The footage quickly spread among weather enthusiasts as one of several striking tornado videos recorded during the outbreak.
