Hundreds of Tractors Invade Central Madrid as Furious Spanish Farmers Protest Soaring Costs

Madrid, Spain – A long line of green tractors rumbled through the centre of Madrid as farmers descended on the capital to protest soaring production costs.

Footage filmed by Giaccomoleopard near Calle de Serrano and Plaza de Colón on October 28 shows dozens of large tractors parked and driving along a wide avenue under a bright blue sky, with high-rise towers in the background. Men in high-visibility vests stand among the vehicles.

“It felt so strange to see this on Serrano and Colón,” the filmer wrote.

Around 500 tractors from the farming organisations ASAJA, COAG and Unión de Uniones entered Madrid in five columns that morning, demanding cheaper farm diesel, fair prices and protection from trade deals such as Mercosur. The planned march to the Ministry of Agriculture was called off after a deadly high-speed train crash near Urda in Toledo province, and the farmers instead held five minutes of silence at Plaza de Colón. The organisations said they will announce a new calendar of protests.
