Lake Stevens, Washington, USA – Video filmed by X user Snohomish County Public Works shows Scouts BSA Troop 36 taking part in a Flag Day ceremony to ceremoniously retire hundreds of worn American flags collected from county facilities.

At an outdoor fire pit, scouts in uniform carefully placed faded and damaged flags into the flames. The flags were added one by one and in small groups as bright orange fire consumed the fabric and smoke rose into the air.

The scouts worked in a methodical and respectful manner, using sticks to ensure the flags were fully burned. The setting reflected a formal process for retiring flags that were no longer suitable for display.

“Sunday was Flag Day. Snohomish County Public Works is once again proud to have partnered with Scouts BSA Troop 36 in Lake Stevens to help ceremoniously retire American flags that have been discarded at county facilities. If you have a flag no longer suitable for flying, don’t throw it in the trash, drop it off in the flag receptacles at all three of the county transfer stations.”

More than 300 flags were retired during the ceremony. The event followed established guidance that unserviceable flags should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

The partnership between Snohomish County Public Works and the scouts supports proper collection through designated receptacles at county transfer stations, helping ensure flags are not discarded in the trash.
