London, United Kingdom – A major milestone has been completed at Hither Green station after a huge new footbridge was successfully lifted into place as part of a large accessibility improvement programme.
The work took place over the early May bank holiday weekend under the Access for All programme.
On Saturday, May 2, crews used 500 tonne and 750 tonne cranes to install the new footbridge linking all station platforms to new entrances at Fernbrook Road and Springbank Road.
The bridge installation marks a major step in the project aimed at improving accessibility and customer movement throughout the station.
The wider programme will also include four new 16-person lifts, additional staircases, and a connecting passageway between platforms 4 and 5.
Once completed, the upgraded facilities will provide step-free access from street level across all platforms for the first time.
The improvements are intended to assist disabled passengers as well as travelers carrying luggage or pushchairs.
The £28 million project, funded by the Department for Transport, is scheduled for completion by summer 2027.
Additional upgrades will include new CCTV systems, public announcement equipment, customer information systems, ticket vending machines, and Oyster card readers.
The programme will also restore the nearby nature reserve through replanting efforts designed to support biodiversity and environmental recovery.
The project is managed by Network Rail, with construction work carried out by BAM Nuttall Ltd alongside architects Fereday Pollard & Partners and civil engineering designers Arcadis. McNealy Brown Ltd is responsible for fabricating and installing the main structure.
Officials described the bridge installation as a significant moment in transforming Hither Green into a fully accessible station.
