Heavy Rains Trigger Landslide In Italy Engulfing Vehicle And Blocking Road

Savoca, Italy – Since the late afternoon of March 17, 2026, firefighters from Messina and Enna have been responding to a landslide in the municipality of Savoca caused by heavy rainfall.

The mass of mud and debris swept onto a road, engulfing a van that, according to initial assessments, was empty.

To ensure no one was trapped, a canine unit and the GOS (Special Operations Group) were deployed. Excavators are also being used to remove debris and clear the roadway.

The intervention is ongoing as teams continue their work to secure the area and confirm that no people were affected.
