Salt Lake City, Utah – Body-camera footage shows officers responding to a call initially reported as an assault involving an elderly woman, but they quickly recognized the situation involved an autistic child in crisis.

Officers adjusted their approach by slowing the situation down, speaking calmly, and working to de-escalate while ensuring everyone remained safe.

The officers used specialized autism and mental health crisis training during the response. They also retrieved a sensory kit from a patrol vehicle containing fidget toys and other items to help reduce sensory overload during the stressful situation.

The footage shows the interaction changing as the child begins to calm and engage with officers.

The Salt Lake City Police Department shared the video with the family’s permission to highlight how training, patience, and compassion can make a difference during crisis situations.
