Houston County, Texas – A handcuffed suspect kicked out the window of a Houston County Sheriff’s Office patrol truck and jumped from the moving vehicle during an attempted escape on September 3.
Keon Dewayne Leonard had been arrested on a warrant for assault of a public servant or judge. The sheriff’s office said a “scuffle” was needed to handcuff him, with two sets of cuffs used because he is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 260 pounds.
Once inside the patrol truck, Leonard moved the handcuffs from behind his back to the front and began kicking at a window. After repeated attempts, he shattered the window and dented the truck’s door before slipping through the broken opening while the vehicle was moving.
A deputy chased Leonard and used her Taser to “bring him back under control.” He was then placed in another vehicle and taken to the Houston County Jail.
Leonard faces additional charges of evading arrest, attempting to escape while arrested and destruction of property, along with his initial charge. He remains in the county jail on a $30,000 bond.
