Providencia, Santiago, Chile – A sudden storm brought heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms to the Santiago Metropolitan Region on 13 October, flooding streets and disrupting daily life, with Providencia among the hardest-hit areas.
Footage filmed by X user Moe Monsalve between approximately 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. shows hailstones accumulating across streets and surfaces as intense precipitation covers the area in water and ice.
The storm clogged drains with hail, causing street flooding and inundating underground parking facilities and buildings. Power outages and transit disruptions were also reported as the storm swept through the region.
Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service issued a red alert. Classes were suspended on 14 October in Providencia and other affected communes because of the damage caused by the storm.
