Gigantic Blast Triggers Major Fire And Injures Multiple People In Utrecht

Utrecht, Netherlands – At least 10 people have been injured after a powerful explosion sparked a fire in the city center on the afternoon of January 15, 2026.

The blast was described as a “gigantic explosion” that shook the area, scattering debris across a street in central Utrecht. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising into the sky as emergency services moved in to deal with the fire.

Reports indicate the explosion was heard at around 3:30 p.m. Injuries were confirmed, with at least one person hurt and further information suggesting the total number of injured could be as high as 10.

Emergency responders dispatched at least six ambulances to the scene, along with a medical trauma team that was deployed by helicopter. Police cordoned off the affected area while fire crews worked to contain the flames.

Multiple emergency calls were received, including reports of an explosion near Mariaplaats. Witnesses said several people were inside the stairwell of a parking garage when the explosions occurred.

A total of four explosions were reported. The roof of a house next to the parking garage was completely blown off, and flames immediately shot up from the building. One resident said at least one building was entirely destroyed.
