Fireball Meteor Streaks Across Pennsylvania Sky Causing Sonic Boom

Mercer, USA – X user James Eaker filmed a white-orange fireball meteor streaking across the sky from left to right while traveling west on Interstate 80 near Mercer, Pennsylvania.

The meteor left an intense glowing trail and vapor streak before breaking apart high in the atmosphere. The dashcam captured the driver’s immediate shock and exclamation: “Woah! What the f*** was that?!”

The event occurred around 9 a.m. on March 17, 2026, producing a powerful sonic boom heard across Northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania, and as far away as New York and Maryland.

NASA and the National Weather Service confirmed the meteor was approximately 6 feet wide and traveling at high speed before fragmenting. No injuries or ground impacts were reported.
