Homeland, California, United States – Firefighters battled the fast-moving Verona Fire through the night after the blaze erupted near Verona Road and Juniper Springs Road in the community of Homeland on May 19, 2026.
A dramatic video filmed by CAL FIRE and the Riverside County Fire Department captured an intense fire tornado, also known as a fire whirl, forming during the wildfire. The footage shows bright orange flames spiraling upward in a rapidly rotating column of fire, smoke, and ash as the towering vortex twists through the burning area.
Firefighters and fire engines can be seen operating nearby while the violent fire whirl moves through vegetation and structures, creating one of the most dangerous phenomena encountered during wildland firefighting operations.
The vegetation fire was first reported at 12:20 p.m. at approximately five acres burning at a moderate to dangerous rate of spread, prompting requests for additional ground and air resources.
By 1:34 p.m., the fire had grown to 125 acres with evacuation orders and warnings issued across multiple zones. The blaze later expanded to 175 acres and then 200 acres as firefighters worked to establish containment lines.
At 7:10 p.m., officials said the fire had jumped control lines and reached approximately 300 acres while burning at a critical rate of spread. Minutes later, the fire was estimated at around 600 acres.
Updated mapping at 9:48 p.m. placed the fire at 438.9 acres with zero percent containment. By 8:30 a.m. on May 20, the wildfire was estimated at approximately 500 acres with 5 percent containment as evacuation orders and warnings remained in effect.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. One civilian also suffered minor injuries but declined further care.
