Father Daughter And Dog Rescued From Dark Mountain Canal In Spain

Picos de Europa, Cantabria, Spain – Night-vision footage shows mountain rescuers reaching a father, his daughter, and their dog after they became trapped inside a dark, narrow canal in the mountains.

GREIM specialists from the Potes base navigate through the confined rock passage wearing helmets and high-visibility equipment. The rescuers move along concrete edges, climb metal ladders, and pass through knee-to-waist-deep water inside the flooded corridor.

The team guides the trapped hikers through the difficult terrain and helps the dog out of the canal as the group exits the underground passage.

The rescue took place on July 30, 2026, when GREIM specialists from Potes reached a 51-year-old father, his 20-year-old daughter from León, and their dog. The pair had started a circular hiking route from Urdón the previous morning but became trapped after nightfall.

The Matallana corridor has been unusable since 2021. After locating the hikers through the canal de Reñinuevo and an underground rock passage, rescuers provided water, treated minor lacerations, and evacuated them through the same route they used to enter.

The operation was completed at dawn.
