Madrid, Spain – A major security operation unfolded around the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium as Atlético de Madrid supporters gathered in large numbers to welcome their team ahead of the Champions League quarterfinal match against FC Barcelona.
Video filmed by the Policía Nacional shows aerial surveillance from the police helicopter unit during the pre-match security deployment in Madrid.
The footage includes real-time telemetry overlays such as coordinates, speed, altitude, and targeting crosshairs as officers monitored crowd movement from above.
On the ground, thousands of Atlético supporters lined the streets and surrounding park areas, dressed in red and white, waving flags and scarves as the team bus slowly made its way toward the stadium.
The Atlético de Madrid bus, clearly marked with the club’s name, was escorted by police motorcycles, vans, and mounted cavalry units through dense crowds of supporters.
Fans ignited flares and smoke devices during the reception, creating thick clouds of red, pink, and white smoke that spread across the streets and partially obscured the vehicles and security units.
A FC Barcelona team bus was also seen moving through the secured route under heavy police presence.
The aerial camera circled the Metropolitano stadium, revealing its distinctive circular structure and white roof, along with large gatherings of supporters in the surrounding areas.
Authorities confirmed the match was classified as high-risk, requiring a coordinated deployment of nearly 1,500 personnel, including police units, drones, canine teams, cavalry, and emergency services.
The helicopter unit provided live intelligence to ground teams, supporting crowd control, traffic management, and monitoring of pyrotechnic activity ahead of the match.
