Family Rescued After Being Trapped In Snowstorm With Ice Crashing Into Vehicle

Las Navas Del Marqués, Spain – A family was rescued after being trapped by heavy snow near a wind farm in Las Navas del Marqués, Ávila, including a child of eleven and a person with reduced mobility.

The incident occurred at 21:10 on Saturday, January 24, when the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) was alerted by the Operational Services Center (COS) about a vehicle stuck on a snowy track. The four occupants were unable to leave due to deep snow and strong winds.

After contacting the family by phone, rescuers found they lacked proper winter clothing for the freezing conditions. Greim specialists prepared snowshoes, warm clothing, and lighting equipment before heading to the scene.

The family was evacuated in groups of two and given the necessary gear to walk to a point where a snowplow, the official Greim vehicle, and local police were waiting.

During the operation, wind turbines in the park were temporarily stopped after ice from one of the blades had fallen and fractured the family’s vehicle windshield, posing a serious risk.

Once safe, the four individuals were taken to Guardia Civil facilities in Las Navas del Marqués, where they were sheltered from the storm. None required medical attention.
