Gaviota Coast, California, United States – Santa Barbara County Fire crews responded to a medical emergency near Highway 101 and Arroyo Quemada on the morning of January 8, 2026.
At 7:47 a.m., an excavator operator working on debris removal along storm-damaged railroad tracks was involved in an accident. A large erosion event caused the excavator to fall approximately 10 feet.
The operator, an adult male, was able to self-extricate and climb back to the tracks. Fire crews on scene evaluated him and determined his injuries were minor.
He was transported by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.
The railroad tracks in the area remain closed while recovery and safety assessments continue. For updates related to rail service, Union Pacific Railroad should be contacted.
