Washington, D.C. – Fire and EMS crews in Washington, D.C., are clearing icy waterways as winter begins to thaw.

Fireboat 1, the John Glenn, is actively breaking ice on the Anacostia River near the South Capitol Street bridge.

The operation ensures that a fuel barge can safely depart from its berth despite lingering ice on the river.
