New Smyrna Beach, Florida – District 1 deputies safely brought a couple to shore after their sailboat struck the New Smyrna Beach Jetty on Monday amid heavy rain and rough seas.
The wife called 911 at around 10:58 p.m., reporting that the boat was not taking on water but had sustained serious damage, including to the mast.
Sgt. Leven located the sailboat partially beached on shore, about 300 yards south of Jetty Park, and found both occupants. Neither reported any injuries.
Deputies escorted the couple to the District 3 South office to rest and stay out of the storm while lodging arrangements were made for the night. The pair said they had been sailing their boat home from St. Augustine.
The United States Coast Guard responded to investigate the incident.
